HULK COULD REPLACE RONALDO

Former Brazil manager Dunga has said that Hulk can replace Ronaldo. “Ronaldo was a player like no other, but his place in the national squad is still there,” he told Record. “Therefore, Hulk can become his successor. He is not alone in that race; there are several players who can get there.

“But he has the necessary quality to impose himself in that fight,” continued Dunga, who left Brazil last year after guiding them to the World Cup quarter-finals, and also gave Hulk his first cap.

CORVALLIS LOSE OUT IN OVERTIME

Woodburn celebrated its 5A state championship nearby.

The 2-1 overtime loss was a tough one to swallow for the Spartans.

That doesn’t mean finishing second was taken as a failure by Callahan or his players.

“I’m not disappointed. I’m very, very proud of this group,” Callahan said. “They put a lot together, put a lot on the line and they came through when they had to. They put themselves in a position to win the championship game. So you can’t ask for anything more.”

It was a game of missed opportunities for CHS.

One more game.

The Corvallis High boys soccer team is headed to the 5A state championship game after a 3-0 win over the Raiders in a semifinal game on Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

“It means so much,” said Abdoul, a senior forward. “Redemption and all. It’s a pretty amazing feeling.”

Corvallis will take on Woodburn for the championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium.

CALLAHAN: WE’RE STARTING TO PEAK

Corvallis High scored early and controlled the 5A boys soccer quarterfinal with Wilsonville to earn a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

The Spartans (12-4-1) will play Crescent Valley on Tuesday at Spartan Stadium. The game time has yet to be set.

“We’re starting to peak at the right time,” coach John Callahan said. “The guys are starting to jell. It’s nice to see us playing just as good a soccer (as last season, when CHS won the state title). It’s a different group of guys in terms of play and attitude as last year, but they’re very good in their own right.”
